A dead wolf was found Friday, May 15, 2009 in the Pays de Gex at Peron, in the Ain department

"It was lying lifeless on the edge of the carriageway of the 2x2 routes crossing the Pays de Gex, linking Bellegard Meyrin. A motorist who identified the animal called the police.

On the location, the lieutenant of the wolf-hunt and agents of the Office of National Hunting and Wildlife evacuated the remains and forwarded to the veterinary laboratory in Bourg-en-Bresse for anlysis.

These revealed that the animal was hit by a car and died of hemorrhage. It is a male, single, who at this time of year was probably looking for a new territory after being seperated from the pack.

If the presence of wolves in the Ain is established since 2003, following attacks on sheep, no attack of animals due to this predator has been identified in recent months."

WOLF RECONQUERS ITS TERRIT0RY

The return of the wolf is source of heated debates ... Is it a natural return (recolonization from Italy) or return due to human?

The wolf disappreared from our country in the late 30s. The last wolves were killed in the Massif Central in Lozere in 1951 and in 1977 in the Massif de l'Aubrac, not sure it was whether the last wild individuals or a wolf escaped from captivity. Early 90s, two wolves have been observed in the Mercantour Park.

Scientific studies shawed that this return was natural. From samples of hair and tissue, genetic analysis showed that the Mercantour wolves came from the italian wolf population..

The important forest cover from the italian Alps to the French is a breeding ground for movement of the wolf that can travel distances of 100km in a few days.
Moreover, this environment of low population density and home to many wild ungulates is a perfect condition to the presence of wolves.

It is likely that wolves are in Spain may one day cross the border of the Pyrenees . The blocking experience observed by its return in the Alps could help prepare its return to the Pyrennes...

The wolves are taking about 2% of the population of wild ungulates.. They are not a threat as can claim some hunters... «The wolves were on earth long before man and did not cause the disappearance of any species, can that be said of the human?...».

This new balance « prey-predator » has a positive impact on wildlife of the mountains and forests.

Wolf

The Wolf and the Lamb

The sheep are easy prey for wolves.

They are gregarious animal that move slowly and are not accustomed to the presence of predators. The herd can panick in the presence of wolves and excite them by their behavior.

Wolf compares this agitation behavior to that of a wounded animal. Then, the wolves kill more animals that they can consume.

For each attack, a sworn statement guardian establishes the damage and complete a detailed questionnaire so that the veterinarian can determine whether or not the wolf has killed. On the advice of the veterinarian, the breeder may or may not receive compensation premiums.
