Threats to survival

Loss of its habitat due to repeated seasonal forest fires and to unsustainable logging.

Genetic impoverishment due to the low number and development of new diseases.

Leopard cub

Poaching for the fur trade in Russia and China which represents several million euros. Note that the wildlife trade is 20 billion euros in the world!

Resource depletion of wildlife due to this scourge.

Very weak penalties against poachers on Russian territory for hunting, possession and trade of skins of leopards and tigers because of the inadequacy of Russian laws.

Expansion of road network allowing access to remote areas inhabited by tigers and leopards, poaching is then so easy...

Few people know the Amur leopard, resulting in a lack of local and international support for its conservation.

Raising funds to support anti-poaching.

Involving schools and secondary schools. Organizing photo and video reports. Transmit them to the Tigris Founation which will distribute them among the population living in the area of leopards.

Organizing a petition and get as many signatures as possible,
(target : 10 000) to put pressure on Russian authorities to safeguard it.

THE AMUR LEOPARD

35 individuals in the wild... the most endangered big cat

The Amur Leopard is named after the river "Amur" that runs along its territory and is the natural border between China and Russia.

It is recognized as the most endangered big cat in the world. Cf : IUCN Red List

A remarkable leopard that reminds us of the one of the snow, with its thick winter coat and large rosettes that make the beauty of its dress.

In the 60s and 70s, the Amur leopard was still present in large numbers in the former Manchouria, China, on the Korean Peninsula and the southern part of Primorye, located in eastern Russia.

Its territory is limited today to a restricted habitat in southern Russia along the border with China and Korea where we do not list more than 35 individuals. The future of this species is very uncertain, but it is not invevitable if we act today.

It must be remembered that the Amur Tiger, which numbered only 50 individuals have seen its population increased to 400 thanks to those who have invested in its preservation.
A controlled hunt, a battle against poaching, fires and cons of implementing conservation measures in China and Russia will lead to increase population of leopards..

The conservatives plan to reintroduce the Amur Leopard in the older parts of its range where it disappeared 30 years ago and about where conditions appear more favorable at present : to go further conservation in-situ and ex-situ

Amur Leopard
